Why can't ceramic fiber modules be used at over-temperatures?

Ceramic fiber modules, the "golden partner" of industrial furnaces, are well-known in the field of high-temperature insulation. Choosing the appropriate operating temperature rating is the primary principle when selecting ceramic fiber modules. So, why can't they be used at over-temperatures?

Ceramic fiber modules are a high-performance, high-temperature refractory insulation material with low thermal conductivity and excellent thermal insulation. Within the specified operating temperature range, their internal crystal structure develops slowly, resulting in stable material properties and long-term stable operation for 5 to 10 years.

The modules are essentially inorganic materials, made from ceramic fiber cotton needle-punched into a blanket and then compression-molded. They are Class A non-combustible and do not burn, smoke, or carbonize when exposed to high temperatures or open flames. Therefore, short-term high-temperature shocks will not cause them to burn or damage them.

However, prolonged operation at temperatures exceeding their design temperature will accelerate the growth of the internal crystal structure, destroying the fiber skeleton that supports the module's microporous structure, resulting in a decrease in porosity and a significant deterioration in thermal insulation performance. Ultimately, the modules may experience volume shrinkage, severe powdering, or even large-scale shedding. In severe cases, this can damage the kiln itself, causing immeasurable economic losses.

In addition, when using ceramic fiber modules in kiln environments containing corrosive media, the applicable temperature must be determined based on the type of fuel used. In reducing atmospheres, the material selection and lining thickness should be carefully calculated based on the atmosphere's composition. It is also recommended that the module surface be coated with a specialized anti-corrosion coating to enhance corrosion resistance and service life.
