When purchasing ceramic fiber blankets, how can you accurately judge their quality and performance? Just as people assess the freshness of food by first looking at its appearance, customers selecting ceramic fiber blankets usually begin by observing color whiteness and surface uniformity. This article provides practical identification methods from the following three aspects.
01 Observe the Color
The performance grade of a ceramic fiber blanket is closely related to its alumina (Al₂O₃) content, and color is an intuitive indicator of material purity. In general:
Standard-grade blankets are mostly made from natural raw materials with higher impurity content and typically appear dark yellow;
Regular-grade blankets are white but slightly grayish;
High-purity blankets are bright white, indicating higher material purity;
Zirconia-containing blankets, offering higher temperature resistance, usually appear milky white;
Yellow-green blankets indicate chromium-added ceramic fiber blankets, which can withstand temperatures up to 1400 °C.
02 Test the Hand Feel
High-quality ceramic fiber blankets usually feature clear fiber texture, neat needling patterns, and low shot (slag ball) content. A simple hand-tearing test can be used-products with better toughness and resistance to tearing are generally of higher quality.
03 Identify the Manufacturing Process
Ceramic fiber blankets produced by the spun (spinning) process and the blown process show clear differences in hand feel:
Spun fiber blankets have longer and thicker fibers, feel slightly coarse to the touch, offer good toughness, and are not easy to tear. They are suitable for high-temperature insulation or further processing into fiber modules;
Blown fiber blankets have shorter and finer fibers, feel soft and fluffy, but have lower tensile strength. They are mostly used for producing ceramic fiber paper or fiber boards.
Summary
The methods above help form an overall judgment of product quality. For precise and quantitative performance data of ceramic fiber blankets, it is recommended to submit samples to professional refractory material testing institutions for analysis.
